Thank you for embarking on the Journey to Bethlehem: Minecraft Edition. It is my hope that this curriculum will be easily adaptable to your specific context. In that spirit, I have provided a few examples below that may spark ideas for a new form of ministry in your community.

•   Sunday School:
Consider a five-week series exploring the Advent stories in a new way, through Minecraft. Host a classroom of Minecraft players in-person each Sunday morning, or host a virtual mid-week gathering using both Zoom and Minecraft.

•   Stories at Home:
Create a new Christmas tradition with your family by entering the world of Minecraft, together, exploring the stories of Advent in a whole new way! Imagine reading the scripture together and hearing the day’s Minecraft challenge. Even if only a few players are playing, it can be really interesting to watch the players work together to build story encounters from the Bible in the world of Minecraft. Tip for new players: ask someone to carry you around as they build; you essentially ride on their head and see everything from their perspective (right click on the player to be carried by them).

Story Schedule:
Week #1: In a Dream (Joseph), Matthew 1:18-25
Week #2: In Disbelief (Mary), Luke 1:26-38
Week #3: In Bethlehem (Shepherds), Luke 2:8-20
Week #4: In the Fields (Angels), Luke 2:8-20
Week #5: In Light (Jesus), John 1:1-5, 14

A few words from The Muddy Elf:

“Should we use an ender crystal or a beacon?,” he exclaimed. The answer…? We recommend using a beacon to represent the wild star that seemed to rest over Bethlehem at just the right time.

Writing faith-based Minecraft activities is a whole-family activity in my house, and we love it! Yes, these activities are tested by real humans… ages 7, 11, 14… and 40+!

As a parent, our kids’ worlds of video games (and more!) can sometimes leave us feeling disconnected from truly understanding how they are experiencing life as humans living on planet Earth.

With a few story-based Minecraft challenges, our family has reconnected in ways never before imagined… through video games, through faith, and through sharing life together in the world of Minecraft!

Peace, love, & JOY be with you!

Lisa Kaufer, a.k.a. The Muddy Elf

   (…my Minecraft character)

“Over the years we found that the traditional model of Sunday School works best for kids who like to sit still, do crafts and learn through listening. Even before the pandemic began, we realized that our traditional Sunday School program was reaching fewer and fewer of our kids in meaningful ways. Working with Lisa, we designed a new model of Sunday School that meets kids where they are, doing things they like to do and learning about Jesus in the midst of it. The response has been overwhelming! My own kids now cannot wait to wake up on Sunday mornings because they cannot wait to get to their Sunday School workshop. Thank you, The Muddy Fork, for bringing faith to life for our children!”
